The original was released in April 1985 with a US list price of $65. It was designed by Peter Moore, who is also famous for designing the three-line, triangular Adidas performance logo. The wing mark was inspired by a replica of a U.S. Air Force pilot wing that Peter Moore saw while traveling by plane.
At that time, red x black, red x white x black, white x gray, blue x white, and white x blue metallic were released in Japan. This color, black x gray, commonly known as "SHADOW", was a model that was not released in Japan at the time and was only available in the United States. A retro suede model with the same color scheme was released in 2009, but this is the first complete reproduction with the original details.
